When temperatures rise and the days get longer and longer, we know summer is about to begin. It will definitely be hot and humid outside for the next few months, so last week, we got a cartload of ice cream, snacks and board games to prepare our Intensive English students to beat the heat.
There were six different flavors and types of ice cream to choose from, including a tangy cherry and strawberry sorbet and a delicious vanilla ice cream sandwich! With so many choices, it was hard to save these tasty desserts for after lunch.
Speaking of lunch, students also got to indulge in mini sandwiches, chips, and sodas during the social. Students came together and talked about their favorite flavors, giving them a great chance to practice their English outside the classroom!

After lunch, a variety of board games were set out for students to play with their classmates. Some favorites were Operation, Jenga, and even card games like Uno.
Jenga is always a hit with our Intensive English students. At the games table, a few students formed a small group and began playing, being careful not to remove the wrong wooden beam from the tower. Strategies were shared as the games continued for nearly half an hour before the tower came toppling down.

The conversations kept going well throughout our ice cream social. A few students began discussing where they would like to go for the next social activity, while others commented on the delicious ice cream they’d just eaten.
By the end of the ice cream social, the Intensive English students had eaten their fill of delicious, frozen treats and savory snacks. They’d also gotten to speak and practice their English with fellow classmates and even students from different classes. All in all, it proved to be a fun day in the cool indoors of the Anderson-Clarke Center.

As the first summer session continues, more opportunities for fun and social activities are on the horizon! Stay tuned to learn all about what our Intensive English students get to participate in this summer.
