Love filled the air in the Anderson-Clarke Center last Friday, bringing with it the festivities of Valentine’s Day! Some of our Intensive English students came dressed in their favorite shades of red, others indulged in all manner of chocolate, and all participated in some fun and games.

To begin the afternoon, students chatted about their Valentine’s plans while enjoying a delectable lunch from Little Kitchen HTX. Some options included roasted broccoli, pasta, mashed potatoes, and green beans. For dessert - red velvet cupcakes and three different flavors of cookies!

As usual, the fun and games began once students had wrapped up their lunch. Some of the students first headed to the Valentine’s themed photo booth to take a few group pictures with friends.

Then, a few rounds of bingo ensued, using heart-shaped candies as markers for each bingo card. Pens and lanyards were awarded to the winners of each of the three bingo rounds!

At the end of the afternoon, the winner of our candy jar contest was announced. Earlier in the week, an announcement was made on the #RiceESL social media accounts: “Correctly guess the number of heart-shaped candies in the jar to win a prize!”

Students from all classes participated, coming to inspect the jar and submit their guesses. A very wide range of numbers was guessed, but in the end, there was only one correct answer… 323! And while no students got the answer exactly correct, Mahmoud came closest by guessing 300. He took home the entire jar of candy and a Rice University teddy bear as his prizes!

Just like that, the party came to an end. But the fun didn’t stop there for the students - the weekend was just a few short hours away, and plans were already being made for more hangouts in the near future!
